A welding machine is responsible for generating heat required to melt and join metal parts. One welding machine cannot fulfill the needs of all projects. It is necessary to choose the right welding machine after understanding the welding technique to be applied and the requirements of specific welding projects. Maintaining the welding machine is crucial to produce quality welds consistently. The maintenance tips differ for each welder depending on the kind of welding technique. However, one tip that everyone can implement is purchasing consumables from one of the trusted welding consumables manufacturers and suppliers

Maintenance Tips for Spot, MIG and TIG Welders

Here are a few tips for welders dealing with different types of welding techniques and machines to keep their equipment in good shape.

Spot Welders

The pneumatic welding clamp needs to be lubricated regularly since it is the costliest component of a spot welding machine. Another thing that is equally important is checking the electrode tips. Make it a point to buy high quality electrodes from welding electrodes manufacturers and suppliers If the tips are damaged beyond repair, replace them with new ones. Redressing the tips won’t serve any purpose. Replaceable tips must be cleaned until they are of no use. The electrode tips must be sharpened for optimum performance. There is no gas or added wires in resistance spot welding making it solely dependent on electricity. Hence, maintaining electrodes is crucial.

MIG Welders

One important thing to remember is to monitor and clean metal deposits and dirt accumulating inside as liners are prone to damage due to consistent use. Contact tips, gun liner, nozzles and drive rolls too need to be replaced. Contact thermal spray powder suppliers to extend the life of welding wires or other components and safeguard against corrosion. Spool holder, contact tip, MIG gun liner and drive roller must be cleaned regularly. Cover the machine when not in use to avoid contact with dust and debris. The tips must be stored in appropriate containers provided by manufacturers.

TIG Welders

Turn off gas cylinders when not in use. Look out for clogged liners that may lead to poor quality welds. Special care should be taken to prevent dust, moisture and dirt from accumulating in gas hoses. Welding defects are easily bound to occur due to poor maintenance. Detach the regulator handle to ease the pressure and avoid wastage of gas if the machine is not in use. Wire corrosion too deteriorates the machine performance. Copper coatings or lubricants from thermal spray powder suppliers may help. Packing the wire in between uses is a great way to prevent reactions from exposure to environmental conditions.
